Dempsey Burns Leaves, Not Bridges.

There is not too much that needs to be said about Paul Dempsey. He is a consummate performer heralding from his beginnings as hugely popular Something for Kate front man to now being recognised as the skilled producer and solo artist that he has become.
As a massive Something for Kate fan myself, I hope that this iconic Australian band does not sit on the backburner for too long but after seeing Dempsey’s solo act a few times now I can wait.
It would seem that the punters at the Hi Fi Bar in Brisbane are willing to wait as well. His Brisbane performance from his Burning Leaves tour was well received by all, his voice seemingly raspy yet angelic at the same time. Throwing in some SFK hits and his now famous Springsteen ‘Born to Run’ cover, Dempsey catered for all backed by a musically tight and professional band.
Perhaps Dempsey could have been supported more by the band in the performance stakes as they seemed to lack energy and onstage presence (obviously session guys or in the drummer’s case, guys from other bands). But at the end of the day that is their job, Dempsey is definitely the star of the show.
After seeing a couple of solo shows it is evident that his repertoire is limited, but I truly hope his next batch of songs is just as first-class.
With his impending European tour and residency in the US about to begin, the word of Dempsey is going to be spread worldwide. Finally one of our most acclaimed song writers and musicians will receive the accolades due to him for years. Let’s hope they can see what we do.
