New Music: Mama Kin’s “To My Table”
Words: Clare Kempnich
I’ve heard great things about Mama Kin recently, but I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve never actually listened to her music. It seems I have been missing out. The latest single ‘To My Table’ (released through iTunes on April 14) is a festival song waiting to happen; but for all the right reasons. Mama Kin (aka Danielle Caruana) describes the song as being about “remembering to remain generous”, and does so in the most uplifting way. Powerful lyrics and a perfect laid-back rhythm wrapped around a repetitive, chanted chorus: the song just screams crowd participation, which, judging by her more-than-positive reception at a recent sling of Blues’n’Roots festivals isn’t too hard for Mama Kin to come by…
The track also features some amazing piano from Michael Caruana (her brother) and George Servanis and Tony Buchen on drums and bass. Mama Kin is keeping her fans waiting for the release of the album, however, which is set to be due in stores around July. If this song is anything to go by, we should expect an album filled with honesty, sentimentality and beautiful blues music. As Mama Kin’s newest fan, I urge all Australian-music supporters to check out this single.
