New Music: The Beautiful Girls’ 10:10

Words: Clare Kempnich

The newest single from The Beautiful Girls make it clear that they really are in the music industry to stay. Recent albums Water (2006) Ziggurats (2007) were distinctly Blues’n’Roots, but their new single ’10:10’ is entirely different. They have a new and different reggae sound on this single, showcasing their ability to be influenced by a multitude of artists. Musically, the inclusion of Melbournian Vida-Sunshyne perfectly balances Matt McHugh (thankfully) unchanged and distinct voice.

Thematically, the song is reminiscent of music by Bands such as The Clash and The Specials, promoting racial equity and equality. The singles B-side is entitled ‘Dubstep70’, and is really a testament to the band’s ability as musicians, and a reminder to their fans about just how talented they are.  Included also on the single is behind-the-scenes footage taken from their latest tour and recordings from their upcoming album.

We’ve seen The Beautiful Girls grow and mature with the changing music trends of late and if ’10:10’ is anything to go by, the future is bright for the Australian three-piece. Stay tuned for what is expected to be more great songs from their newest album Spooks, due in stores May 21.
