New Music: The Beautiful Girls’ “Spooks”
When I originally brainstormed what I thought the Beautiful Girls’ new album, Spooks was going to sound like, my immediate thought went to the olden days of Learn Yourself and We’re Already Gone – you know the sentiment – a mixture of John Butler and Jack Johnson, a really chilled out, perfect soundtrack to accompany a drive to a deserted beach in the middle of summer.
Spooks is nearly nothing like this. It’s a mixture of both the old (noticeably heard in After all this Time) and the new, including more Dubstep (listen to Gratitude), more funk, and more electro (see 10:10).
It is wonderful to compare and contrast the past with the present, and to take note of how this abundantly talented band have adapted to the evolving music market. Most importantly, the Beautiful Girls have been able to achieve such a feat without compromising their artistic integrity.
Spooks is released this coming Friday May 21, which will be a great compliment to anyone who is heading to see them on their extended tour’s playlist over the coming months.
The Beautiful Girls will be gracing the Tivoli on June 4 and 5 – tickets are on sale now and selling like hotcakes!
