There was a band. Three white guys and a drummer who’s tanned. Yes these are not the traditional opening lyrics to Blow up the Pokies but in my opinion provide an accurate representation of the band before us; The Whitlams.
Lead man Tim Freedman bantered on stage that these were the new lyrics to one of their biggest hits as written by drummer extraordinaire Terepai Richmond (the human metronome) just moments before the set.
For those who may not know The Whitlams (and therefore I assume are not interested in music or life in general) they have been releasing music to the Australian public and abroad for almost two decades. And the general consensus is that we love it.
Although the constituents have changed throughout this time (expect of course for Freedman) the Whitlam era continues to remain strong and this is evidenced by their live shows. They are all genuinely enjoying themselves and are completely relaxed.
I am yet to see them put a foot wrong on stage. Their consummate professionalism shines through. Freedman has done well to surround himself with other talented and like-minded musicians to accompany his well thought-out pop/rock tunes.
They don’t need flashy lights or laser shows. You go for the music or you go home. With their set beginning at 9.30pm on a Saturday night (which is quite early for a headline act), I couldn’t quite workout whether this was to ensure Freedman could get to bed on time or whether this was for the benefit of the old timers in the crowd. Either way, there were no complaints from me.
If you haven’t seen The Whitlams before they are a must see. This iconic Aussie group will probably only have one more release in them so be quick.
