Coming Soon! Valley Fiesta 2011
The Valley Fiesta stages will run from the Brunswick St. Closure stage to the AlloneWord Stage on Alfred St; encompassing performances at the Brunswick St Mall stage, Judith Wright Centre, Brisbane Powerhouse and throughout Chinatown Mall. New in 2011, Kaliber presents Friday Fiesta in Brunswick St.
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk says, “Brisbane has established itself as a powerful leader on the world music stage, with quality artists exporting across the globe. Valley Fiesta is an incubator of upcoming new music and the perfect platform to showcase emerging artists alongside established acts.”
Valley Fiesta spreads the love across the whole Valley, with the festival taking place throughout the Brisbane entertainment precinct during October 7 & 8. Performing on the Brunswick St Closure Stage through Saturday, October 8 is a slew of home grown acts including: HUNGRY KIDS OF HUNGARY, NINA LAS VEGAS, NEW NAVY, LANEOUS & THE FAMILY YAH, THE JUNGLE GIANTS, SPACE INVADAS, EVIL EDDIE, CHEAP FAKES AND PAT CAPOCCI.
The Brisbane bred band, loved Australia-wide; HUNGRY KIDS OF HUNGARY are set to inject some beaming indie-pop into the Valley Fiesta. After taking the nation by storm with their debut album “Escapades” the quintet became familiar faces at nearly every festival under the sun. Recently the band have been taking a well-deserved break from the touring circuit to remember what their homes and loved-ones look like,;as well as write a few new tunes. Valley Fiesta crowds will be amongst the first to hear the new tracks in October.
The part-Egyptian, part-country and all business NINA LAS VEGAS is heading Brisbane’s way to get the Fiesta started. She’s known to frequent the decks of some of Australia’s best clubs and festivals, as well as host triple j’s House Party – the soundtrack to parties across the nation every Saturday night. Nina has formed some great partnerships in her time as a DJ. She joined Anna Lunoe and Bad Ezzy to make all girl club DJ supergroup HOOPS, and founded Heaps Decent with DJ friends Diplo and Levins; an initiative committed to finding and nurturing the creativity of underprivileged and Indigenous young people. This in-demand and genuine party pocket-rocket will be clearing her calendar to help get Valley Fiesta moving and shaking this Spring.
EVIL EDDIE will be returning to his stomping ground of Fortitude Valley to stir up the crowd and get their gluteus maximuses shaking. Having served as front man for the three-time ARIA award nominated Hip Hop/Punk outfit Butterfingers for the last nine years, Evil Eddie is now a solo man under his own moniker. Over the Summer of 2010 his first single ‘Queensland’ brightened up the triple j airwaves on high rotation and landed itself amongst the most loved tracks in triple j’s Hottest 100. The ode to the Sunshine State will be feeling right at home at the 2011 Valley Fiesta.
The fiercely syncopated, bombastic and bubbly grooves of LANEOUS AND THE FAMILY YAH will be out in full force in the Valley this October. Mr Laneous’ trademark falsetto croon and charming hip hop murmurs are a familiar noise at some of Australia’s most notable festivals including Big Day Out, Parklife, Sunset Sounds, Peats Ridge Festival and Woodford Folk Festival. With nine releases under their belts including two acclaimed albums, Laneous And The Family Yah work the stage (and crowd) like they were born there. Valley Fiesta will be one of the first to see them bring their life second release this year – EP “Paper” (out early September).
SPACE INVADASʼ debut ARIA-nominated album Soul:Fi produced an impressive collection of smashing radio singles; Original, Life, Super Sweet and the latest Done It Again. Amassing an extraordinary compilation of rave reviews and acclaim the duo impressed not only on record but also on stage. Space Invadas not only sold out their national album launch tour but performed at every major festival in the country including; Golden Plains, Future Music, Splendour In The Grass, Days Like This, GTM, Sydney Festival and Playground Weekender. Recognised not only locally but also on the international echelon, Space Invadasʼ Soul:Fi has been championed by the leading tastemakers of the world -from the likes of Giles Peterson on BBC1, Garth Trinidad on KCRW in LA, Tyler Askew in NYC and Andrew Jervis (Ubiquity) in San Fran. See Katalyst and Steve Spacek backed by their impressive live band at Fiesta.
Brisbane button pop youngsters. THE JUNGLE GIANTS are answering the call of the wild with their impressive EP gaining the attention of triple j Unearthed and spins from radio pundits Sarah Howells, Rosie Beaton and Dom Alessio. With an average age of just 17 and a half, this four piece’s potential belies their diminutive stature.
PAT CAPROCCI will be bringing some good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll to this year’s fiesta. Recently signed to Australia’s leading rockabilly and roots label, Press-Tone Music International, Pat’s first solo release “Steppin’ Out” has been hailed by critics for its captured high energy and diversity. With a little country, a slice of western swing and a whole lot of rockin’ 1950’s rockabilly, Pat Caprocci will have the guys wearing their biggest belt buckle and the gals donning polka-dot dresses and red lippy at this year’s Fiesta.
Through a combination of hard work, a good vibe and great songs CHEAP FAKES have been making a name for themselves as Brisbane’s best party hosts. They’ve had the nod of approval from triple j’s Sarah Howells, who named their debut “Sticks & Stones” as one of her top 10 albums last year. Local radio 4ZZZ showed their support too, with two singles hitting their top 10 of their Hottest 100 countdown earlier this year. Blending hip-hop, reggae, jazz and a little rock’n’roll this genre-hopping six- iece are going to be bringing the summer soundtrack to this year’s Valley Fiesta.
Sydneysiders, NEW NAVY have whipped triple j and the dance floors into a frenzy with their clean guitar licks, dripped in reverb and smooth vocals. The four-piece have learnt a lot from sharing the stage with great Aussie acts, Dappled Cities, Miami Horror, The Scare, Midnight Juggernauts and Philadelphia Grand Jury. Their sing-a-long indie-dance anthem ‘Zimbabwe’ is currently gaining rotation at triple j and their live show promises to bring the streets of Fortitude Valley alive with more drums than you can throw a stick at.
