Review: Gyroscope @ the Zoo

Dec 12, 11 Review: Gyroscope @ the Zoo

With over a decade of grunge experience and a bag of studio albums to their name, Perth rockers Gyrospope are building quite the impressive resume. This gig was part of their Chose Your Own Adventure Tour where their loyal fans voted on the setlist they wanted to hear at their respective gigs. These guys have made a name for themselves over the years as being one of the best live rock acts in Australia and the hundreds of punters that voted and showed up to see their chosen songs performed were testament to this.

Although summer was not officially upon us yet, any local knew from this night in the Zoo (being notorious for a lack of ventilation and air-conditioning) that we are in for a disgusting summer. The stagnant heat did not stop the sweating mass of people jump in unison as the boys opened with Driving for the Storm. An oldie but a goodie.

The middle of the set provided a particular highlight for me with Beware Wolf and 22 of 3 back to back followed by an absolutely erupting rendition of Doctor Doctor that gave the floorboards at the Zoo a really good stretch.

Front man Sanders with his trademark ‘no shirt and rats nest hair’ look cast a familiar frame onstage against the backlights and provided plenty of energy to keep the crowd interested. Their styleof power chord rock/grunge needs these onstage antics and middle finger giving angst to keep everyone going otherwise if you don’t get lost in the atmosphere it really is just four chord riffs overand over again – but you don’t notice this in the heat of the moment.

Safe Forever and their staple mash-up of Fast Girl / Beds are Burning (Midnight Oil) provided further highlights to the evening. To finish of a well-rounded set (which mind you it seems clear that the voting public are more partial to their older material) they busted out the electric Snakeskin and finished off with Don’t Look Know, But I Think I’m Sweating Blood sending the crowd into hysteria.

You can’t go past these boys; they have definitely continued carrying the torch for Australian rock and remain as one of Aussies finest live rock outfights.
