Review: The Jim Jones Revue, Delta Riggs @ the Zoo
The Delta Riggs are the perfect fit to support the feat that is Jim Jones and co. Being a band that primarily lives on the road somewhere between Brisbane and Melbourne (and occasionally in other cities), they have an honest, dirty blues and rockabilly feel. Perfect opener for the British rockers.
Having caught the Jim Jones Revue live for the first time almost a year ago at the Gold Coast Big Day Out, they were (along with the Greenhornes) the band that made the biggest impression. Singing their praises for almost a year and catching them again at Falls Festival over the holiday season, I knew it wasn’t a once-off love. Third time round, I’m completely smitten.
I’m quite disappointed tonight, as the crowd is lacking in volume and atmosphere. Certainly, there’s a bit more space than usual at the Zoo to have a momentary boogie, but this is a band that deserves a big noisy, dirty, sweaty crowd.
After a number of stretches from side of stage, the brilliant Mr. Jones arrives on stage with the swanky band. As usual, the five-piece look dapper in black with slicked-back hair setting their sound perfectly in the rock’n’roll era generations ago.
With every ounce of charisma you could possibly want from a leader, Jim Jones was sexy, dirty and hilarious, filled with an energy that is rarely seen in this day and age. Mixing the striptease song Cement Mixer with some very provocative dancing, and you’ve got a show!
The set was filled with rock’n’roll beauties, including Another Daze, Rock’n’Roll Psychosis, The Princess and the Frog, and Drop Me In The Middle. With some licks sounding very White Stripes, and Jones’ voice occasionally resembling Nick Cave, the set was one of almost perfection. There is nothing to fault.
